Abstract

This article is an approach to the different cinematographic expressions produced by the indigenous Ecuadorian communities. After pondering about a long history of representations of the indigenous made by the white and the mestizo. Ecuador is looking at the birth of a cinema which confronts the outmoded indigenism, but sometimes it also repeats the basics precepts of it without questioning them. We are looking at the birth of a cinema that is trying to find its own voice and ways of representation.

Ecuadorian, born in 1953, filmmaker, director of Incine, founder of Ochoymedio and Maac Cine. Director of the fiction feature films La tigra (1990), Between Marx and a naked woman (1996), Cara o cruz (2003) and As the day arrives (2004). Ecuadorian producer of the movie Proof of Life (2000) and producer of the feature film Los canallas (2009). Actor, photographer, documentary maker, publisher and distributor of music and film records. Professor since 1982 at the Central Universities of Ecuador, Catholic University of Quito, State of Cuenca and lncine. Bachelor of Design and Teaching, Master of Educational Management, Doctor of Latin American Literature.
